How do I get my computer to recognize my new external cd burner?

I have windows xp sp 3. i just got a new usb2.0 external cd burner. the light comes on when i plug it into the computer, but the computer wont recognize the burner. what do i do?

Was there a cd that came with the burner? If so, maybe your burner needs drivers to work. Also try it in a different usb port. What external burner is it? Does windows make a noise like it knows it’s connected at least, or does it just not do anything when plugged in?
