Should this class be learning assembly language?
In our freshman year we have to learn “Computer Systems: A programmer’s perspective”.
which seems to be all about assembly language. Our class however consists of people who don’t have any programming background, aside from one semester in java the previous semester…
But this teaches from a “programmers” perspective, surely half a year of lessons does not make someone a programmer.
You have to be able to understand programming before you try to understand the logic BEHIND it so as to improve it and become a “power programmer”.
I find that people are slurping down the lessons and regurgitating them. Finishing the problems like “riddles” , memorizing problem structure, and w/e w/o any understanding of how they affect actual programming.
The professor meanwhile seems to take glee in having the honor of teaching such an advanced and difficult subject.
Having a basic understanding of assembly language will lead programmers in the right perspective for when they move onto any other environment.
This is my strong opinion.
