How much tv/video game time?
is appropriate for a four-year-old?
Unfortunately my bf’s son has access to his own tv, a vtech video game system, another small computer thing for kids, and a gameboy. Seeing as how I am the one that watches him the most I try to limit how much he is on this stuff – and make him go outside a lot or play with his regular toys. I feel bad, but it just doesn’t seem right to me for him to get off of one thing, and on to another (i.e. off tv, onto computer or gameboy).
What would you, as a parent or child caresitter, recommend?
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than one to two hours of quality TV and videos a day for older children and no screen time for children under the age of 2.
My son is 3, and had NO screen time until he was over 2 and I think he has watched maybe 10 hours total in his life so far. But, neither his father nor I are big TV watchers, nor do we play video games, so that makes it easier. We spend a lot of time outdoors.
I have included two links, one talks about the research results of screen time & children (not too positive!)
The second link has some recommendations on how to limit screen time.
Good luck! This little guy is lucky to have you to be a positive influence!!
